Is the U.S. Headed for Tyranny?

Nowhere in the constitution does it say the government may confiscate private property without due process of law. Yet that’s exactly what’s happened with BP.  Our government is supposed to be representative, people in positions of leadership either elected or confirmed/approved by the congress. Right now we have something like 45 “czars,” non elected, appointed but not approved or confirmed persons in positions of authority where they shouldn’t be.  (You know — like in czarist Russia? I don’t see how anyone would think “czar” would be an acceptable term for any position associated with the United States Government, but that’s another matter) And it’s more than just that the constitution has been violated, it’s that the present administration is wreaking perhaps irreparable damage on our country, taking it out of the realm of being a nation governed by law and into that of being governed by a king. Or dictator. Or a tyrant.

Thomas Sowell is a professor of economics and a Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow with The Hoover Institution at Stanford University. I’ve long read Professor Sowell’s column’s and always find them insightful. His  most recent piece appearing in Investor’s Business Daily’s online organ Investors.com is entitled Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny? Clear and to the point, it draws some very interesting parallels between what happened in Germany back in the early part of the twentieth century and what’s happening here, now. It’s not long, but worth the read. Here’s how it starts.

“When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.

Such people were a valuable addition to his political base, since they were particularly susceptible to Hitler’s rhetoric and had far less basis for questioning his assumptions or his conclusions.

“Useful idiots” was the term supposedly coined by V.I. Lenin to describe similarly unthinking supporters of his dictatorship in the Soviet Union.

Put differently, a democracy needs informed citizens if it is to thrive, or ultimately even survive

    Yes.

Aren’t you glad we KNOW the Answer, the One who is the Alpha, the Omega, knows the hairs on our heads and the words we type before they spill onto the page? Without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, all is lost, that’s for sure.

Time is so short, in the near term for our own short lives (just a drop in the history bucket) and long-term (eternity)… I’m glad to know you are “out there” with the Truth of God’s Word, the Bible, and are cranking it out as led by the Holy Spirit.

We are praying for our country as never before, and doing our best to interrogate (?) each and every candidate running for office at every level of government, so we can, if in His will, turn our beloved USA around.

Tyranny? I think we are there to a great degree. Our president has taken over a car company, fired the CEO, detailed to banks what they can and cannot do, is trying to set wage limits and told an entire industry that it cannot drill in the Gulf of Mexico. [Thankfully the appeal to the drilling was set aside yesterday] We see our military going forth into battle without the support and logistics needed to engage the enemy with all of its mighty force; thus, a speedy victory or any victory at all is doubtful. As for me, I remind myself that He is in control. His purposes are being served. I am to stand firm and go forth in His divine plan for myself and my nation!

I just read this yesterday and the topic of governmental tyranny came up today, brought up by an acquaintance discussing her concerns with nationwide educational testing (the new ACT which is used throughout K-12). My state of Michigan just voted to use it. It includes a section that tests “soft skills” setting personal ethical dilemmas before students. An actual question reads something like, “Your boss tells you to do something unethical. Do you do it or do you report it?” Apparently when one graduates you get a designation as to how helpful you’ll be to the future global economy. If you don’t have a designation(because you didn’t take the tests)there are colleges where you will not be admitted….

This acquaintance is a homeschool mom, and feels strongly about this topic. But she pointed out how it affects private schools as well, not to mention Christian families whose kids are in public school (the road my family is currently entering). It also makes me wonder what the future impact will be on the Biblical university I went to that has a solid Bible foundation and isn’t about to waiver spiritually, but builds leaders to enter the world. Apparently already student loans are now through the federal government, not the state, and once again, if there’s no special designation on a high school certificate, good-bye loan….

Sigh! Anyway, that’s what my mind’s been wrestling with today! Once again I know God is Sovereign, but it’s hard to not worry (especially when it involves my kids)!

Irony of ironies, I stumbled upon a blog post today about Christian fascists growing stronger. So if Christians think our government is headed toward tyranny and secularists think Christians are moving toward fascism, can’t we conclude that perhaps we are headed to some sort of government fit for the anti-christ?
